I borrowed "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak from my sister, not realizing what it was about. I assumed it was about a person who loved books. This book follows a little girl, Leisel, through the holocaust. The catch is, it is written from Death's perspective. It follows her as she ages, from being sent to a foster family with an accordion playing father, through hiding a Jew in the basement, and through her realization of how precious books are, not matter what is written in them.
I did not want to put this book down. It will be the best book I have read this year, hands down. It doesn't matter what I read after it. I recommend this book to everyone. I have a hard time reading historical novels, especially one filled with facts. This work of fiction read like it could be anyone in Nazi Germany. And even though it was fiction and it was not from her perspective, I found this book extremely captivating. If you read any book this year, it should be this one.
